CHEYENNE - AGE 18
Cheyenne was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes back in 1993, at the tender age of 22 months. At the time, there weren't any diabetic kids living in our area so we were in for a real adventure learning how to adjust to a new lifestyle on our own! This was all before carb counting, so we spent our days learning food exchanges, filling out log books, and navigating through a maze of doctors who'd never helped care for a toddler with diabetes. Since Chey was the first in the family she was the trail blazer for the rest of her siblings. Lucky Chey got to be our guinea pig! Although it's a challenging life, over the past 16 years we've seen the world of diabetes care get smarter and better!
MITCHELL-age 16
Because diabetes didn't run in our family we were all totally shocked in 2006 when Mitchell was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 13 by, of all people, his big sister. They were both clear across the country visiting with their grandmother for the summer. Chey recognized his symptoms right away and gave him a test with her own meter. Sure enough, it read "HIGH". She and her grandmother took him to the hospital right away. Three days later, Mitch, under the care of his 15-year old sister, flew back home to the west coast. Thank goodness for big sisters! It took us all a good year before we recovered and readjusted to a life managing two bloodsugars at once. Yikes!
CHLOE-age 9
The newest member on the diabetes scene around our house. We call Chloe the "newby". She was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008 at the age of 8. This was the third time around, and this time we didn't even skip a beat. When she finished Mom's giant-sized diet soda in ten seconds flat, well, we just knew. We gave her a test...sure enough it said "HIGH". Chloe's now on a new pump, she claims she waited to get diabetes until Mini-Med finally came out with a pink one. The blue ones wouldn't just wouldn't do.
CONNOR-age 10
We call Connor "The Last Man Standing" since he's the only kid in the family who doesn't have diabetes. We've all got our fingers and toes crossed that he'll be the one that remains diabetes-free forever. He is helpful when his sisters and brother have low blood sugars and knows just what to do to help. He's also very happy to eat all the baked goodies that people bring by in an effort to help control his siblings blood sugars!
JUSTICE - son-in-law
What do you do when three diabetics just doesn't seem challenging enough? Well, your daughter marries one! This is Justice, who was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 16, and when he and Cheyenne come to visit they're very handy to have around, Justice helps Chloe count carbs and juices her up when she's low. When they're not visiting, they're back at school navigating college life.
